Module 6: Report on two resources about the film element on sound

The two film elements on sound I chose to research were Diegetic & Voice-over narration.

Sound in films is termed diegetic if it is part of the narrative sphere of the film.  For instance, if a character in the film is playing a piano, or turns on a CD, the resulting sound is “diegetic.”  If on the other hand, music plays in the background but cannot be heard by the film’s characters, it is termed non-diegetic or, more accurately, extra-diegetic.  The score of a film (commonly referred to as the “soundtrack”) is “non-diegetic” sound.

This website explains what diegesis is and how it’s used in literature and film, pertaining to flim sound and music.

In voice-over narration, the voice can be used to: 1) introduce particular parts of a program; 2) to add extra information not evident from the picture; 3) to interpret the images for the audience from a particular point of view; 4) to link parts of a sequence or program together

This website provides a history of voice-over narration.

Heidi, I recall researching the term “diegesis” toward the beginning of the course, so your explanation of diegetic sound made complete sense to me. However, I clicked on your resource and could not find this term on the page. Is there another section of the site where this is explained?

You found a great resource for voice-over narration. Sarah Kozloff’s article offers a thorough history of how this technique has been used in film. In addition, she refutes objections to the use of voice-over narration, something I always appreciate in an article. I feel the best use of voice-over narration is when I do not really notice it, in other words, when it seems to be a natural part of the film.

One suggestion: Shelley expects us to use MLA formatting in citing sources, both in our writing and the Works Cited list. Not a criticism, just trying to help :-)
