Module 2: Reflection on reading

I was amazed to learn the turnover of owners from major movie studios.  Most of the major studios are mostly owned by non-Americans.  The only all-American conglomerate is Time Warner.  I had no idea that in 1984 Disney formed Touchstone Pictures to produce more adult movies.  In 1987, Sony made their first major Japanese purchase of an American entertainment company when they acquired CBS records.  I knew actors were paid extremely well but I was shocked to find out just how much.  Tom Cruise took home $70 million for Mission:Impossible, which he also worked as a director and Bruce Willis who earned $50 million from The Sixth Sense.  I also didn’t realize that actors are paid after a film has been viewed at the box office.

Heidi, I wasn’t caught off gaurd over the amount of money the actors and actress make, just over the fact that Tom Cruise made more money on Mission Impossible then Bruce Willis did in The Sixth Sense.

Heidi, I was also very surprised that Time Warner is the only American owned conglomerate! Like Jeanne expressed, the amount of money popular actors are paid did not shock me either, although I think it is excessive. $20 million for ONE film, plus a percentage of the gross profits (page 53)?? Wow. I compare it to some professional athletes who whine about a sprained finger, and are still paid a bundle (even if they miss a game). This is quite a contrast to professional bull riders, who ride with pulled tendons and broken bones, but do not usually make a dime unless they ride for a full 8 seconds. It is difficult enough for most people to find a job they enjoy, much less being paid ba-zillions to do it :-)

I thought the same thing, I had no idea that only one American film company existed. Call me naive but I figured that the American film industry would have more in the market.

You need to combine your reflection on reading with your reflection on the viewing. I want those two reflections blended together. I want to see you apply the reading to the films!
